About Me

A little about myself and what I hope to accomplish with this site.

I am a 47-year old book-geek currently completing a BA in English through a distance education program at the University of Waterloo. I live in Ottawa Ontario with my lovely wife and son. We have three cats and two amazing dogs.

My love of books was probably started by my mother who, like myself, cared for her books beyond the norm. She was a huge reader and her love of books and their physical care was passed on to me. I collect first editions of my favorite authors and am one of those odd people that, if I was waiting for a plane and it was delayed by a few hours, I wouldn't get mad, I would just pull out a book!

In contrast, my wife used to bend and crack the spines (*gasp*) of her soft-covers so she could hold them one-handed. She also turned the corners of pages instead of using bookmarks, and once (or twice) even dropped her book in the bathtub. (*cringe*). My wife has since switched to e-readers which has prevented most of this book-cruelty, but as e-readers are not technically "books" I wouldn't care if she dropped one in the tub or bent the corner to save a page.

My jumping into the book review business started the week I left my job at a large pharmaceutical company. I needed something to occupy my time and, as I was "free," I wanted to do something that I loved. So I started the Ottawa Book Club and this Blog is simply an extension of that effort to read more and share thoughts with fellow book-lovers.

My hope is to speak to and connect with fellow book-geeks and help them to decide to either pick up, or in some cases, avoid, their next book. To encourage reading in all its forms (yes, even e-readers) and to try and read outside of my comfort zone and expose myself to new authors.
